An advantage of organometallics is that there is a large potential variety of ways these molecules may be modified synthetically and by external means. We (MS and MGH with our coworkers) have postulated that organometallics can be used as nonlinear chromophores exhibiting various types of "nonlinear chromism", ie switching by external stimuli between molecular forms with different nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. This part of the project will attempt to make use of our experience in investigating NLO properties of organometallics and will take it a step further, towards creating nanostructures containing organometallic chromophores. Such nanostructures may include additional performance enhancing features as eg ordering through various means, possibly leading to photonic or plasmonic crystal structures.
